Periscope Features

Installing
Periscope
Following purchase of Pocket PC Creations or Periscope, download Periscope from
the Download page. Save the
PeriscopePresentation.exe program file to a convenient folder, double
click the file to install on a Windows desktop or laptop PC. When
installed, from the Windows Start menu four components will be visible:
- Install Periscope Presentation Server (for install to Pocket PC)
- Licence Agreement
- Periscope Presentation Help (also present with F1 key)
- Periscope Presentation (for operation of the Periscope 'client' on desktop or
laptop PC)
Before Periscope can be used to project a Pocket PC's screen, the
Periscope Server must be installed onto the Pocket PC and started.
To install the Periscope Server, connect the Pocket PC to the client
desktop or laptop PC and establish an ActiveSync connection. For more
information about using Microsoft ActiveSync and connecting a Pocket PC,
consult the ActiveSync documentation.
Once a connection has been established, select Install Periscope
Server from the start menu. ActiveSync will now install the
Periscope Server software onto the Pocket PC. Periscope Server can also
be installed form the Connection Menu, see below.
After installation is complete, the Periscope Server appears as a 'Start
Periscope'
item on the Pocket PC's Start menu. Select the item, and the server
remote will
be loaded.

Establishing a
Connection
Once the Periscope Server is running on the Pocket PC, the Periscope
Client software can be run on a desktop or laptop PC to receive the
screen remotely, either via wireless (including Bluetooth) or wired connection.
Right-click the window, and select the Connect option from the
popup menu. The dialog opposite will appear.
Enter the IP address (or host name) of
the Pocket PC, and click the Connect button. The IP address is assigned
within Control Panel on the Pocket PC, in the connection properties for
the TCP/IP interface (Settings/Network Connections/Adaptors). Refer to
wireless communications manuals for further assistance.
When the connection is established, the
contents of the Pocket PC's screen will be displayed in the Periscope
window.

Display Options
Once a connection has been established and the image on the Pocket
PC's screen is visible in the Periscope client, several options are
available to adjust the image. Right-click the window to display
the popup opposite.
Magnification
The Pocket PC screen is significantly smaller than the average PC
display, so Periscope offers three levels of magnification to improve
projection visibility. The Normal, Double and Triple
Size options magnify the image by a constant factor, while the Maximum
Size option determines the largest magnification factor that will
fit on the screen (which may not be an integer). |

Windowed and Full Screen
In some situations it is convenient to
have the Pocket PC screen displayed in a window on the PC, so that other
programs can be viewed simultaneously. This is possible using
Periscope's Windowed option. During most presentations, however,
it is more visually appealing to have the image displayed Full Screen.
When in the Windowed mode, the
Periscope window can be set Always on Top, to prevent it from
becoming hidden behind other windows, such as a PowerPoint presentation.
Copy to Clipboard
Periscope provides the Copy to
Clipboard function to assist in the preparation of screen-shots of
the Pocket PC. The copied image can be pasted into an image editing
program.
Active Mode
In some situations when demonstrating using a Pocket PC, it's
more convenient to use a standard mouse and keyboard to interact with
the software, rather than the touch screen. Periscope
makes this possible using Active Mode. When
active mode is enabled via the popup menu, mouse clicks and key-presses
within the Periscope window will be transmitted to the Pocket PC, which
will interpret them as taps to the screen and character input.
Note that only left-clicks are transmitted, and thus right-clicking
can still be used to display the Periscope popup menu.

Remote Control
When performing a presentation it is most convenient to control
everything from a wireless Pocket PC that can be carried about, rather
than having to interact with a fixed laptop or desktop PC.
Periscope remotely controls the projected Pocket PC display, and optionally a Microsoft
PowerPoint presentation, from the Pocket
PC.

Pocket PC (press large button at bottom of Pocket PC). |

Presentation Options
To launch an open PowerPoint
presentation on a desktop, click the blue forward button on the remote
toolbar. Other controls are as for a video player.
The up arrow icon on the right of the
control toolbar presents a menu with four PowerPoint presentation
options, for maximum control, see opposite.
The presentation can be run by
tapping the forward and back buttons, or by using the left and right
hardware buttons. The up and down hardware buttons scroll through the
speaker notes.

Drawing on PowerPoint Slides
Periscope supports remote
drawing on PowerPoint slides using the Pocket PC stylus. Within
the Remote window, simply tap the pencil toolbar button to open
drawing mode. In this mode, a full screen landscape view of the
active slide is displayed to sketch on. Using the stylus, tap
and drag to draw -- strokes will be transmitted and recreated on
the PC, using PowerPoint's pen colour settings. |

The drawing can be cleared by pressing one
of the navigation hardware buttons: left and right move to the previous
and next slides respectively, while up and down clear the drawing but
remain on the current slide. Pressing enter closes drawing mode (but
does not erase any pen strokes). |
